Meet Mary
I was unfit and very overweight, my husband wanted us to travel to France to watch the Tour de France and do some walking in the Pyrenean Mountains. I remember thinking I just would not be able to keep up with the walking group. Always in the past when I tried to lose weight I would stop reducing my intake because I was too tired and listless.
Watching the cyclists I began to wonder what they ate to allow them to cycle each day as they did. I decided to find out what I should be eating, but the only information I could find were many lists of foods telling me what was “good” and what was “bad” for my health. During a consultation with a dietician I asked the question: “If there are only 6 different food groups (Protein, Carbohydrates, Fruit, Vegetables, Fats and Dairy), how much can I eat from each group on a daily basis?” For the first time I had the answers!
In the beginning I represented the foods with the following

|
Red buttons for |
Protein |
|
Glass marbles for |
Carbohydrates |
|
Tooth picks for |
Fruit |
|
Green buttons for |
Vegetables |
|
Small stones for |
Fat |
|
White marbles for |
Dairy |
I put them all in a bowl and when I had something to eat, I removed the relevant item from the bowl. At the end of the day, I knew I had eaten in a well-balanced and nutritious way, and aside from reducing my weight, my energy levels increased dramatically.
The next idea that I had was to put all the food I should eat on the table and then stop eating when it had gone. But obviously in the Australian climate this is not practical. That is when I thought of a card system. I invented a card system “The Good Butt” which helped many Australians to lose weight.
Now, in addition to the card system, here is the app for iPhone/ iPad, so that I can share my weight loss knowledge with people worldwide.
This is an easily understood healthy food system, which can be used by most people around the world.
